According to a plaque at the memorial, hometown hero Gipp died in 1920 when he was playing football at the University of Notre Dame (at age 25). Eight years later the team was told of Gipp's dying wish, "win one for the Gipper," and they did. This memorial was erected in 1935; Ronald Reagan played Gipp in a 1940 film.
