Almost directly across the street from Children's Fairyland in Oakland is a relic from the warship Maine. The Maine was in Havana harbor in 1898 when it mysteriously exploded. Unscrupulous journalists and newspaper publishers (namely Hearst) blamed the Spanish for the explosion and whipped up public sentiment to use this as a pretext for starting the Spanish-American War (Long after hostilities had ended, the explosion was determined to have most likely been caused by coal dust in the ship's coal bunkers). Anyway, a bronze torpedo port was salvaged (warships of the time carried early torpedoes), and somehow wound up here.
