Considered the oldest food prep utensil, vegetable mashers were first used in wooden form by the ancient Egyptians. The potato emerged from Peru, brought to Europe and cultivated for taste. The mashing breakthrough is believed to have occurred in 1771. This more modern metal masher, scaled down for human chefs, is still in use.
