A group of us from the Science Museum of Minnesota received a hot tip about a guy in North Carolina who had created a "Whirligig Farm." We had to check it out! In May of '96 we traveled to Lucama, North Carolina (45 minutes from Raleigh). The place is magical, the man who created it is even more interesting. His name is Vollis Simpson. He is a retired house mover turned whirligig artist. We were interesting in making a connection between his work and students in Minnesota who were building their own small-scale whirligigs.

Visited a few years back -- bad photo day, though. Directions: 3 miles from Lucama -- going toward Wilson on 301, go left at Klint's Korner (Radford Rd.). Two stops signs, left at the second one (Wiggins Mill Road). After a couple miles, you can't miss it.
