Baraboo, Wisconsin: Man Mound

Only human-shaped mound in North America. An adjacent road was cut across the Man's legs, so they've been painted onto the asphalt. Not mowed in summer to give some shape to the man. Not much height to the mound. Our favorite part is the asphalt.

Man Mound

The Man Mound.

[Bryan Grondfeldt, 05/08/2024]

The best time to see the very low-rise Man Mound is in summer, when the grass over the mound is left untouched to make its man-shape visible. Otherwise, all you can really see are the green legs painted on the road that cuts across the man's lower extremities.

Man Mound Park

Located northeast of Baraboo, on Man Mound Road, lies in Man Mound Park. The Man Mound is a precontact earthwork of a humanoid figure located in Greenfield, Sauk County, Wisconsin, east of the city of Baraboo. Constructed during the Late Woodland period, the mound is the only surviving anthropomorphic effigy mound in North America. Not clearly visible during summer due to grass/weeds, but mowed around object to discern placement and mound.

[Damita Lewis, 07/31/2023]

An adjacent road was cut across the Man's legs, so they've been painted onto the asphalt. The feet on one side, and the body on the other, are not mowed in the summer to give some shape to the man. It's not much of a mound, though.
