Town Named Sugartit

I used to live in Sugartit in Abner Creek Station. It's a wonderful place that I miss dearly. I was told that the name was derived from the women who used to pick cotton and they would take their babies with them. In order to pacify them they would take sugar and tie it up in a hanky for the babies to suck on.

I tried to find a bumper sticker for Sugartit, but was only able to come up with a sticker for "Tootertown SC," which is a different neighborhood. I would love to own a Sugartit sticker.

One more thing about Sugartit: it's pronounced sugartee-yit. And while you're there be sure to visit the Zentrum museum at the BMW plant on Hwy 101, just west of Rt. 85.

Dennis also points out that the esteemed name is now in use as a trademarked brand of moonshine and merchandise.

Sugar Tit

Sugar Tit is still there, even if the signs are gone. Joe's Fishing Lake and Restaurant are going strong, The General Store is now an auction house. I live just down the road and all the locals know Sugar Tit lives on. I even have a vintage-style "Sugar Tit, SC" decal on my car.

Town with Hilarious Name

It's just outside of Greer, more of a crossroad community than a town. the only restaurant in Sugar Tit has the most normal name: Joe's. If you blink, you miss it.

There's only one stop light, well, two if you count the one at the Sugar Tit Race Track.

When you get to town, there's one sign that welcomes you to Sugar Tit. That sign shares a post with an advertisement for Joe's, the only business in town besides the track. The Sugar Tit community has a radius between three and five miles, and Joe's Lake & Restaurant has been the heart of the area since the 1950s. Sugar Tit was mostly farmland before the BMW Manufacturing Co. built its plant in Greer, which led to subdivisions and industrial parks, but there's still a good bit of farmland in the small community. Long-time Sugar Tit residents know each other, and many have memories of growing up and fishing at Joe's Lake.

Sugar Tit, No More?

My kids and I followed the directions to go to Sugar Tit. After going back and forward several times, we stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. Long story short, an elderly gentleman informed us that we were about two years too late and the cleared area we passed was where the old Sugar Tit General Store used to sit.

Understand you were looking for Sugar Tit but could never find it. Did you look in SC? Hope you like. PS: we have a racetrack there also.
