- On Roanoke Island. From US-64 turn north at the Fort Raleigh sign, then follow the signs for the Lost Colony Theater. The small, square granite plaque is flush with ground, set into the earth behind the last row of seats, just to the west of the large wooden building.

The plaque commemorates a visit by President Franklin Roosevelt in August 1937, and marks the spot where he sat in his wheelchair to watch "The Lost Colony," one of his administration's New Deal Federal Theatre Projects. It's still performed every summer.
