In 1967 a fatal fire in the Apollo 1 Command Module forced NASA to make modifications to its escape system. Wymore, a welding and machine shop, created a boilerplate capsule to simulate the newer and heavier Apollo Command Module, which was then used to replicate the re-entry forces on the Command Module's parachutes. The parachute system was successful and eventually helped astronauts safely return to Earth after re-entry.
