It evidently takes a village of fake houses to bring cellular service to the southwestern suburbs of Denver.

Address:
Hwy 470, Ken Caryl, CO
Directions:
The village is visible on the south side of Hwy 470 about a mile west of the Kipling Pkwy exit. You might be able to get closer if you exit at Kipling Pkwy and drive west along the south side of Hwy 470. If you really want to.

Cellular Village

These houses are actually replicas of tuberculosis huts from the late 1800s. It was then believed that people might be cured of tuberculosis by moving to a high, dry climate. The thin, dry air made it easier for those suffering from TB to breathe, but didn't cure any.

Cottages disguise an otherwise hideous array of telecom cellular equipment. The tiny mobile service village has existed peacefully for decades. It makes you wonder how many real towns are left out there along America's highways.

Cellular Village

Here beside the highway on its west side are a group of little wooden cottages, each square with a wraparound porch and a glassed-in cupola "widow's watch" on top. It's a peculiar little village, where there are no roads, no sidewalks, and nobody is ever there. That's because this is a village of cellular phone towers, where these buildings were constructed to conceal them. The first was designed and built by US West Cellular in 1994, and soon other cell phone companies settled at this village, including NexTel and Western Wireless, building a total of 4 cottages through the 1990s. The transmission antennae are housed at the peak of each building.
