Sign: First Adopt-A-Highway in the World

The Adopt-a-Highway program was born on March 9, 1985, when its first sign appeared on this stretch of US Highway 69 in Tyler. The Tyler Civitan Club was its initial participant. The concept came from Texas Dept. of Transportation engineer James Evans, after he litter-ally (pun intended!) saw trash litter the ground when it flew out of someone's pickup truck. The program gradually gained in popularity and soon spread across 49 of the 50 U.S. States (Vermont has its own "Green Up Day" program) as well as several other countries.
