Oil drills and equipment decorated with paintings of animals. Jean Dakessian painted the first in the 1970s -- at the height of the project, over 50 had been transformed into whimsical creatures.

You can see three animals safely from the road. However they really do not want you hanging around there, and for good reason: the air smells very gassy.

You can spot a few of the Iron Zoo animals from the freeway, but if you drive into the entrance along 33 you'll find several more hidden in the nearby hills.
