There are actually black squirrels all over Haverford, and neighboring Ardmore as well. I guess a few graduated.
[Shelly Rabuse, 05/18/2021]Haverford College never really had a mascot, per se. We were known as the "Fords" for much of our existence. In the past 20 years or so, a growing population of black squirrels on campus has earned the school the unofficial nickname of the Haverford College Black Squirrels. These creatures are not to be found anywhere nearby -- a small step off campus and their population is non-existent. On campus, however, they have developed a strong community and even engage the slightly larger population of grey squirrels in battle sometimes. The creatures have warmed our hearts enough to carry their name into battles of our own!
