The monument highlights the location of the former Matthews Hotel, but it's also a monument to African-American business and the entertainment district that once existed along Howard Street. In its heyday it hosted cultural figures such as Ella Fitzgerald and Cab Calloway. The monument was designed by Miller Horns and erected in 2012.
