Lewiston played an important role in the Underground Railroad. There is a monument located on the bank of the Niagara River in Lewiston named for a book by Margaret Goff Clark: Freedom Crossing. Josiah Tyron was Lewiston's "station master" on the Underground Railroad. The bronze sculpture, by Susan Geissler, depicts a family of freedom-seekers, as well as Josiah Tyron and the fictional character Laura Eastman from the book. There is also an Underground Railroad Museum downriver in Niagara Falls if you want to learn more about this topic.
