Florence, Oregon: Exploding Whale Park
Woeful cartoon whale "Flo" sign marks park dedicated to a nameless cetacean that washed up in Florence in 1970. Unwisely dispatched with dynamite, causing a blubber downpour.

- South side of town, From US-101 turn west at the stoplight onto Rhododendron Drive. Drive a half-mile. You'll see the park sign on the left.

The park does not tell much about its marine namesake, but is a nice place to relax and take in the scenery.

There is a nice sign by the road with a melancholy (pre-explosion) whale with the title "Exploding Whale Memorial Park." You can park your car and take a short walk to the river and there are a couple of signs with information about the tides, the local bridge, and the local flora.
There are a few benches and picnic tables that have a nice view of the river and sand dunes. We walked around for about ten minutes and found no other mention of the infamous whale.
