Apple Creek, Ohio: Golden Soldier: Medal of Honor

Hometown hero William J. Knight was one of the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. He drove the captured General locomotive in its failed effort to reach the Union lines during the Civil War. For some reason, his lumpy statue is painted gold.

Civil War Statue

A Civil War statue honoring one of the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. Union Army Private William J. Knight was involved in the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War. For some reason he is painted entirely in gold.

According to the statue plaque, Knight was the engineer who drove the captured Rebel locomotive in its unsuccessful attempt to reach the Union lines. Unlike some of his fellow raiders he was not hanged, and lived until 1916.
