Hometown hero William J. Knight was one of the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. He drove the captured General locomotive in its failed effort to reach the Union lines during the Civil War. For some reason, his lumpy statue is painted gold.

According to the statue plaque, Knight was the engineer who drove the captured Rebel locomotive in its unsuccessful attempt to reach the Union lines. Unlike some of his fellow raiders he was not hanged, and lived until 1916.
