The statue of George Washington was Milwaukee's first public monument. It was sculpted by artist Richard Henry Park in 1885, and restored in 2018.

The statue was paid for by Elizabeth Plankinton, whose dad was a Milwaukee millionaire. The mother and child were added to the base of the statue at Plankinton's request. Park and Plankinton became engaged, but he later dumped her for a Minneapolis dancer. She never married.
