Newellton, Louisiana: Giant Mailbox

14 feet tall, 8 feet deep, 4 feet wide, it's been around since 1956. There are no nearby houses, only flat farm fields.

Address:: US Hwy 65, Newellton, LA
Directions:: On the northeast corner of US Hwy 65 and Cutoff Rd. Roughly two miles south of Hwy 888, or three miles north of Newellton and Hwy 4.

I have been coming to the Giant Mailbox, on my way to Mississippi from Texas, since I was in my mother's womb almost 42 years ago. I now bring my children to see the mailbox on our trips to Mississippi. We will continue this tradition until it is no longer there. Ironically, the mailbox was purchased in Houston, Texas. Fits the saying, "Everything's bigger in Texas."

When you're coming off of Hwy LA-4 towards Newellton, turn left on Hwy 65 and the mailbox will be on your right about 2-3 miles down.

Born and reared in Newellton. Ben and Virginia Burnside were very close friends of our family. The infamous swindler, Billy Sol Estes, posed (photo in Time mag) sitting in the box, with Ben standing at the base, in the '60s.

Heed the warning of not getting in the mailbox...if you try to pull your car up close to climb on top, you may almost flip it trying to get out. This is what I assume would happen, since we surely didn't try.
