A memorial in a small park in Chanute commemorates the role that the town's namesake -- engineer and aviation pioneer Octave Chanute -- played in the Wright Brother's invention of the airplane. The memorial consists of a large metal model of the Wright's first airplane supported on a giant arm that pivots as a weathervane to face into the prevailing wind. Metal figures representing the people present at the Wright's first flight surround the memorial. The plane's propellors spin in the wind.
