Aside from Georgia, another state has its claim to the stew. Brunswick County, Virginia, is believed to be the original home of that dish known as Brunswick Stew and has the historical marker to prove it. Jimmy Matthews concocted the stew in 1828 during a hunting expedition. He stewed squirrels with butter, onions, stale bread, and seasoning in a large iron pot. When the hunters returned and tasted Matthews' invention, they asked for more.
