Sculptor Benjamin Thorne Gilbert, an 87-year old ex-tax accountant, described this statue as representing Washington having a vision of victory, although it looks more like Washington daydreaming or spaced out. It was originally made of Italian marble, but Gilbert was so dissatisfied that in 1959 he decided to re-do the entire thing in metal at his own expense.
