This is an ancient stump of a fossil lycopod tree that lived approximately 300 million years ago. It was found in a coal mine in Harlan County, Kentucky. One of the few Pennsylvanian subperiod coal tree stumps on public display that retains many of its roots. It's also one of the largest Pennsylvanian tree stump fossils on public display in North America.
