Everglades Mural and Bar
This is a cool mural of the Everglades in the lounge in the Clewiston Inn. All four walls of the lounge are covered in scenes of wildlife. The Inn was built by US Sugar, and the 30 ft. dike built around Lake Okeechobee, in combination with the sugar cane industry, has led to the destruction of large tracts of the Everglades. The bar opens at 4 pm, so have a beverage and enjoy the mural and the irony. Or contemplate what in the hell you're doing in the middle of sugar cane fields having a drinks.
They also have a nice little museum kitty corner from the Inn.
[Phrank Phester, 03/09/2012]The Clewiston Inn is a local landmark. It's registered as a National Historic Site, built in 1938, totally restored, and sits in the middle of town. Walking into the lobby thru the front doors, one is taken back in time. There is something very interesting in the tiny hotel bar, the Everglades Lounge. The best feature of the bar is the "impressive wildlife mural by world-renowned artist J. Clinton Shepherd," who passed away many years ago. Life size paintings of Florida wildlife and plants cover all four walls. There is an alligator, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, many birds, and other Fla. animals. Plus native Florida plants. It's worth the stop. The hotel also has a restaurant that's pretty good.
