Shakespeare Ghost Town is only about 2-3 miles south of I-10. The tour is excellent and led by the family who owns the property; the family ownership dates back nearly a hundred years. They have a hotel, blacksmith shed with a working forge, a powder keg vault, assayer office and more! They did indoor hangings inside one of the buildings, since the trees weren't big enough. Super cool and a great value for the price.
[Tom, 02/23/2022]We tried to visit in March, and I'm glad I called ahead because their hours are VERY various. The man I spoke with said that they would next be open around April 10th.
[Laura, 03/20/2010]Shakespeare Ghost Town is an authentic ghost town in Southern New Mexico on Interstate 10. It's owned by a family that has managed the town for generations, and most of the buildings and attractions are still intact. Plus, it's reputedly haunted. Billy the Kid, as a matter of fact, use to wash dishes in the hotel at Shakespeare, and Russian Bill and Sandy King were both hanged there. They also host reenactments and living history exhibits throughout the year.
