Mancelona, Michigan: Robinson Scenic Gardens

Formerly Good Shepherd Scenic Gardens, now a concrete lawn statuary business where figures may appear to be arranged in almost meaningful Biblical, animal, or cartoon character scenes.

Agree that it's not the biblical scenery stuff mentioned -- that part is overgrown. But weird and creepy and fun at the same time. I bought a Buddha for my garden and plan on stopping again when in town. There's lots to choose from!

Sign now says "Robinson Scenic Gardens" and the area with the biblical scenes was visible through fences but no longer accessible. Instead, there is now a large collection of colorful ceramic animals and people out front, from a giraffe to a hippo and the weird horse mentioned previously. Signs said "Browsers Welcome" and the ceramic molds were pretty wild - very cool place but certainly a little creepy as well.

My friends used to go camping near here, and every year they'd stop and see the statuary. This place is wild. Not only do they sell lawn ornaments of all types, but there is a whole sculpture park with Biblical scenes done in lawn statuary. Much of it is not in great shape; we have several photos of the lot of us posing with a headless Jesus statue. There is also a very large statue of a bizarre horse-thing, probably 20 ft. tall. If you are sensitive to the atmosphere of a place, watch yourself here -- my friends with high sensitivity find the whole area incredibly creepy. I mostly just found it bizarre, although the giant horse freaked me out.
