Cleveland, Ohio: President James Garfield Castle, Other Graves

Garfield, America's second death-by-handgun President, is buried in a castle-like structure that includes a painting of the assassination on its interior wall. He shares the cemetery with other celebrities such as Elliot Ness and John D. Rockefeller, but the President's tomb is the biggest.

President James Garfield Castle

A sign of the times! We were amused to see this: "Please refrain from playing Pokemon GO inside the Garfield Memorial."

Even assassinated presidents and their respectful visitors are unlikely to win this battle with the augmented reality undead.

President James Garfield Tomb

That U.S. President James A. Garfield is a relatively obscure name today is an understatement. Okay, maybe more known than, say, Millard Fillmore, but still.

It's notable, because Garfield was an attractive politician so skilled and eloquent that he once gave a convention speech for a candidate he supported, only to snag the presidential nomination for himself. But like his work, the popular legacy for, and awareness of, this president has long since passed, thus also has the impetus for his tomb, the Garfield Memorial, in Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery. Not only that, the sandstone mausoleum's eclectic, hybrid architectural style held sway in the United States for just a few years.

So what? The formidable structure, encrusted with ornament and art-including an eerily kick-lit standing Garfield statue on the main floor above the crypt-is definitely worth a look. The crypt contains the coffins of the president and his wife, and urns containing the ashes of their daughter and son-in-law. Climb the winding steps to the observation deck, which has impressive views of the city skyline and Lake Erie.

A stop at the Garfield site also gets you to the vicinity of the cultural and art institutions of University Circle, and not too far from the older hippie, younger hipster Cleveland Heights and its Coventry Village.

In addition to the sites already mentioned, Lake View Cemetery, "Cleveland's Outdoor Museum," also boasts having the largest concrete-filled dam east of the Mississippi. You cannot walk across it, but you can see it from Edgehill Road.
