The Mega Millions Muffler Man is not the only big money story in Washington. Legend has it what was left of the entire Confederate treasury is buried somewhere in the county. Rumors of gold coins found still pop up from time to time. The supposed chest that held some of the gold was located and can be viewed at the Mary Willis Library in town. As far as where the gold actually ended up...it's anyone's guess!

The chest was left behind when Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Cabinet fled Washington while on the run from the Yankees. It supposedly held a third of the Confederate gold (it's a big chest) and wasn't successfully opened by a locksmith until 1948. It was empty. January 2020: Photo added.
