Video: Snack Time for Henry the Bear

Henry the Bear

Mitchell, Oregon

Roadside America spent some time in and around Henry's big cage at the Little Pine Truck Stop. Hugh, who rescued Henry as a cub, used to let thousands of visitors get up close to the 800-lb. bear, feeding him with apple slices in their mouths. Now, though, Henry has gotten more protective of Hugh, so he limits the apple slice trick to himself and his wife Skeeter.

Still, Henry by nature seems gentle, as Hugh tells us about the bear's bird buddy.

Snack Time for Henry the Bear (2009)

Hugh: Get on your rock. [Bear noise] Get on your rock. C'mon get up there [Bear noise].

Oh man, you're starving to death. Just starving completely to death, aren't you.

You like them cookies. He won't even eat an apple.

Skeeter: Oh well he likes apples too.

He loves them cookies though.

I had this lady, licking tongues with him. Every time she'd say, I'm in love. She'd lick his tongue every time he'd go to eat, she'd lick his tongue.

[Bear noise] Just give it to him. Don't fool. Go ahead and go out now.

He's got two birds that actually goes in.

He only eats with one of 'em. One of 'ems not brave enough I guess to eat, his mouth's not that far from that bird.

I was in there one day, and I seen that bird lying on his leg, you know, he just kinda looked at it, and went back to eating.
