Muffler Man - Bunyan
Roanoke, Virginia
Arm Position: Standard
Accessories: Tire (though reported tireless in 2014)
Report from Dennis Chastain, who toils in the shadow of "Big Man":
"I work at Williamson Road Service Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Attached is a picture of our 'Big Man,' with his new 'uniform,' as well as the American flag he holds.
"He's about 25 feet tall, and has the correct hands. According to the Roanoke Times, which did a story on him a few months back, the gentleman who owned Dabney Tires, the original business in this location, went to an automotive convention of some sort in Washington, D.C., in the 1940s. Standing in front of the convention center, and placed in such a way that visitors had to walk between the statue's legs, was the Muffler Man. Mr. Dabney was so taken with the big man that he purchased him and brought him back to Roanoke, installing him in his present location.
"The big man is such a landmark in Roanoke that we seldom have to give our address to folks looking to come to our shop. We simply tell them to come to the shop on Williamson Road with the 'Big Man' out front. 95% of the time, that's all the address we need to give.
"By the way, we do indeed do custom muffler work." [7/8/99]
