This was hard work. You need a strong back, and a regular shovel (def not a spade)! The dirt is hard, need to dig at least a foot deep. Don't forget a wagon; buckets of dirt and gravel are very heavy. You can take your dog on a leash. We stayed at Queen of Diamonds Inn -- very clean and comfortable. There is a place across the street that will explain the mining process and rent everything you need for only $30. Very helpful and kind.

You really need to use your imagination for this one. More impressive was the 1940s gas station about a half mile further down the road at The Farm at Carter Hill

Formerly Hobo Junction, this long-term trash-n-treasure shop has become more satisfyingly cluttered with time. Odd home-built statues and sculptures add to the claustrophobic decor.
