Nine-foot-tall bronze quasi-Bigfoot was unveiled June 24, 2023 - the 50th anniversary of its final sighting. Possibly the only public monster statue modeled on a description from an official police report.

Big Muddy Monster
I visited Big Muddy on Easter Sunday and he was decked out with bunny ears and an Easter basket! When you turn in on the street between McDonald's and the Holiday Inn Express, at the stop sign turn right. There is a small circle drive where you can park and take a picture of Big Muddy.
[Donna Eaker, 04/13/2024]This bronze statue of the region's legendary Big Muddy Monster is located about a block from the Big Muddy River. There's easy access via the Holiday Inn Express parking lot at 120 Muddy Monster Road.
[Gaye Auxier, 07/06/2023]BMM made his last appearances in 1973. The screaming, smelly creature left foot-long footprints and was, reportedly, covered in mud.

The monster was reported to be screaming and covered in mud when last seen in 1973. Not wanting that as its civic symbol, Murphysboro chose a more dignified representation of Bigfoot for its nine-foot-tall statue.
