- Rayne, Louisiana - Frogs of Rayne
The town has over 35 concrete frogs all over town. Most are painted to look like the employees of the business they are seated in front of. Some are female, but most are male. They are about three feet high. The city website has a printable map of the murals that are all over town, but you are on your own finding the frog statues. We counted 35 in one hour before it got too dark to look. It's a fun way to spend an hour or so, especially if you have kids in the car.

- Rayne, Louisiana - Wrong Way Catholic Cemetery
Interesting that this is noted by Ripley's Believe It or Not as the only Judeo-Christian cemetery that faces north-south, contrary to the east-west tradition. The town was moved 5 miles to the north to be near the railroad (back in the 1800s), and the cemetery was moved, too. They had already laid out most of the graves when the error was discovered, so they just left it. Old cemetery with the above-ground crypts. Neat for a drive-by, especially if you're already there for the frog!

Neat statue - frog wearing nice jacket and has a top hat! Right off the interstate to the south. Stop at the Candyland Cottage next door - awesome little place.

There are many stories behind this wrong-facing cemetery in Rayne... It's a fun thing to check out though, just like the many frog murals and giant metal frog next to the police department!
[Harold Savoie, 08/22/2010]St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery is oriented the wrong way -- not east-west as is supposedly every other consecrated Christian boneyard. The mistake was noticed after the point of no return -- too many people had already been buried (though these are above-ground crypts, but whatever...). They left it as is, and now it's one of two reasons to visit Rayne.
Created for display in August 2006, Monsieur Jacques (a VERY large frog statue) was left "unpainted" or "skinless" for various reasons. In this form, unity (of humanity) is represented by showing that underneath the colors of our flesh, we are all the same.
Rayne is known as the "frog capital" these days, but it all started when a trio of Parisians, Jacques Weill and his brothers, began a profitable export business, shipping the hoppy residents to restaurants across the country.
The large frog statue sits next to the local police station immediately off the I-10 exit for Rayne. After way too many years driving past this exit, I'm glad I made time to check it out this past week.
