The Gourd Place now also carries gourd imprint pottery! The owner is so nice and opened for us after we called from parking lot. A must-see, cool, off-the-beaten path stop.

We didn't see a fruit stand, but we did see more junk people. One of them, carved from wood, peers through bushes. Some are playing cards, some are in a wagon. Each is unique with a different head; one is made from a broom, another is a gourd. Kind of fun. Definitely unique.

What appears to be a humble produce market at the side of Route 30 in Pikeville is in fact one of the largest shops of gourd art I've ever seen. Bird houses, feeders, soup ladles, all painted in bright colors, some with faces and designs. The mother and daughter were busy at work in the shop, but happy to tell us about their methods and creations. Free popcorn is available for all visitors, and dried gourd birdhouses for those who want to try painting them at home. A great back road surprise.
