Rumored Grave of Petey, Little Rascals Dog
Silver Spring, Maryland
Died 1938
Aspin Hill Memorial Park is the final resting place of J. Edgar Hoover's dogs, 40 to 50 humans who insisted on being buried with their pets, and the location of the "Medical Rats Memorial."
But its most famous internee is "General Grant" or "Jiggs," which some have claimed is one of the many dogs that played Petey, the dog with the magic marker circle around one eye, from the Our Gang (a.k.a. "Little Rascals") movie short comedies.
The dog lived from 1928 to 1938, and his grave is labeled: "General Grant of R.K.O. Jiggs." But there's no mention of Petey. Roadside attraction fan (and pet cemetery researcher) Julie Mangin wrote to us in 2020: "General Grant of R.K.O. was an English bulldog, a breed that never appeared in the Our Gang movies (I've looked). R.K.O. had nothing to do with the Our Gang movies." Julie found that the rumor was started in the 1960s by an owner of the cemetery; the previous owners never claimed Petey was there.
Three thousand miles away, much closer to Tinseltown, is the grave of a "Petey" at the famous Pet Memorial Cemetery in Calabasas, California. Pet Memorial is also home to other pet celebrities and celebrity pets like Steven Spielberg's Jack Russell, Rudolph Valentino's dog, Kabar, and Hopalong Cassidy's horse, Topper.
