This restaurant and "fixtures" were built by my father, Fredrick William (Bill) Heath, contractor-builder (deceased 1954).
The giant chicken was constructed from plaster and chicken wire. A ladder went up into the bird, and you could climb all the way up to the eyes and look out. It was the tallest structure for miles around, built beside what became Interstate 80 (at Watt Avenue).
The next owner was a farm implement dealer, and then a succession of furniture stores -- to the present.

Thirsty in Sacramento, California? Quench your thirst at a row of nine drinking fountains along one wall inside the Sheraton Grand Hotel. Bizarre, but it's great modern art.
[M Orrick, 10/27/2003]Our internal debate: "When does the number of drinking water fountains exceed any notion of practical use and become funny?" The number we arrived at was 300. But these nine will have to do for now.

- Sacramento, California - Ship-shaped Water Intake Facility
Along Jiboom Street (old Highway 24) on the waterfront is a boat-shaped concrete structure in the middle of the Sacramento River. It's actually a water intake facility, but it contains distinctive glass architecture (featuring a mobile within the rotunda!) and spectacular views of the city and river, including the historic Tower and I Street Bridges and the downtown skyline. The facility just opened and is a very distinctive landmark off Interstate 5, especially entering the city southbound from the Airport/Natomas/Arco Arena area. (Note: no fishing, swimming, or diving is allowed from the observation deck.)

September 2008: Melissa notes "I don't know when this was torn down (I grew up here and don't remember it at all, so I assume it's been decades) but there's a furniture store at that address now, and has been for years."
