- Riverside, California - Parent Navel Orange Tree
Just checked in on the parent tree, and it's still enclosed in its protective canopy.

- On the southwest corner of Arlington and Magnolia Aves. Riverside Fwy exit onto Arlington Ave., drive west, then take the second left onto Magnolia Ave. The parking area is on the right, just past the tree.
The tree is inside a protective barrier now. Has been for years, according to locals.

The Mother Navel Orange Tree is sealed up, and has been for some time. It looks like a big white portable greenhouse. An insect that spreads a bacteria which causes a disease known as citrus greening is the cause for concern.

[Randy, 06/17/2010]We recently stopped by to pay our respects to our citrus elders, and parked behind the monument in a small lot. Couldn't tell if it was privately owned by the adjacent building, so we didn't linger long.

If you look closely at the Parent Navel Orange Tree, you'll see an interesting feature: Sometime before 1950, the roots of this tree began to die. It was decided to plant 16 small trees around the base of the original tree, grafting their trunks onto the trunk of the main tree. You can still see them today.

In a way, that's better -- a fruit shrine, with the parent tree shrouded but visible through translucent walls.
