Beautiful statue of mermaid curled up on rock on the side of the murky Concho River that flows downtown in San Angelo, TX. Really a beautiful statue in such an unexpected place -- far West Texas, an area more noted for its cactus, rocks, and desert (except along the river lined with pecan trees).

Pulled up on a Sunday. Place looked closed. Some ostriches were outside in a pen. Called the telephone and it was disconnected. The pecan vendor on the same road, about 2.5 miles west, said it was closed down.

On the grounds of the Guadalupe County Courthouse. There's a very nice veterans' memorial next to it. I don't think you are supposed to climb on the pecan.
[Shelley Anderson-Ledwig, 12/23/2020]Nearly 60 years old, this large pecan definitely deserves some dignity.

A man named Ollie "Brushy Bill" Roberts died in Hico on December 27, 1950, claiming he was 91-year-old Billy the Kid and that his supposed death in 1881 had been a hoax to collect reward money. "We believe his story," declares a plaque in front of the statue, sculpted by James Rice in 1987.
