Fallen Giant Robot -- Even more awesome in real life.
[Cat Morley, 10/18/2013]"Goldie 1971" is a sculpture by artist Joe McCreary. It looks like a cross between Oz's Tin Man and the title character from the film "The Iron Giant," and is a memorial to the history of Birmingham, Alabama's fallen iron giant, the Sloss Furnaces.
Goldie is on display in the Woods Quad at the University of Alabama. Many online news articles about Goldie suggest that he was supposed to move on to a new home sometime in late 2009, but it now appears that he may be residing in Woods Quad indefinitely.
[Mindy, 12/07/2010]On April 27, 2011, Tuscaloosa was devastated by a mile-wide EF4/5 tornado that ripped through the heart of the city. McAlister's Deli was on the edge of the storm's path. A giant oak tree that stood in front was destroyed, but the restaurant suffered minor damage compared to the surrounding buildings. A few months later, what remained of the tree was carved into a giant glass of McAlister's sweet tea. It serves as a symbol of hope and regrowth for the city. When life hands you a lemon (or a tornado) make it into a giant sweet tea!

A large, working kaleidoscope can be found in Snow Hinton Park. When I first noticed it, as I was driving by, I thought it was a giant sextant or possibly a telescope. When I parked and walked over to it I saw the artist label and discovered it is called "Kaleidoscope," created by artist Eric Nubbe and installed in 2018. If you look through the eyepiece you can see glass pieces which can be moved, just like with a real kaleidoscope.
