Jefferson, Texas: Grave of Diamond Bessie

Anne Moore, youthful prostitute, was brought to Jefferson in 1877 by her diamond-heir husband and murdered. Her grave has been a tourist attraction ever since. It's not a big grave, but visitors sometimes leave gifts of costume jewelry.

Directions:
Oakwood Cemetery. From downtown drive north on Alley St., cross the train tracks, then turn right at the water tower (E. Webster St.). Drive past the water tower and into the cemetery. Continue straight until you reach a T intersection, then turn right. You'll see the grave ahead on the right, in a little fenced-in plot, with a marble bench for contemplation.

Diamond Bessie was the popular name given to Bessie Moore, aka Annie Stone, a prostitute whose murder in the woods, propelled her to the level of local legend She was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, allegedly by her husband, Abraham Rothschild. When she was alive, her male admirers showered her with gifts of diamond jewelery.
