An editorial in the March 25 Niagara Falls Reporter lambastes America for its wimpy approach to tourism in the face of a Canadian juggernaut. It notes that not a single new tourist attraction has opened in Niagara Falls, New York, since 1982, and that was a shopping mall that didn’t survive the 1990s. “In the over quarter-century since, there’s been nothing save a tethered balloon ride that mainly offers a depressing view of the unfulfilled promise of the city’s tourism district.”
In contrast, Canada has already begun its viral marketing for “Niagara’s Fury,” an “extreme” attraction that will open on Memorial Day weekend “utilizing technology and science never before conceived.” The details of the attraction are the most closely guarded secret in Canada at the moment, but speculation is rife that it’s either a jet-fueled Universal Studios-type ride or a floating theater surrounded by a wrap-around waterfall. Or maybe it’s both. Whatever, it’s light years ahead of anything in Niagara Falls, America. We enjoy the Cave of the Winds as much as anyone, but it requires all that walking….
