Wigwam-shaped Mohegan Casino Follows Foxwoods' Success
An Indian casino which opened a year ago is reporting success similar to that of a neighboring tribe's casino. The giant, stylized wigwam of the Mohegan Sun casino, near Uncasville, CT, has lured more than 20,000 visitors a day since October 1996, and generated $360 million in gross revenues. Foxwoods Resort Casino, about ten miles away, was Connecticut's first casino when it opened in 1992.
The last of the Mohegans number some 1,200, who will eventually share in the casino's revenue. For now, most of the profits are going to the government and to pay off the cost of building the Mohegans Sun.
The Foxwoods, owned by the 400-member Mashantucket Pequot tribe, bills itself as the world's biggest casino, with 40,000 daily visitors and 12,000 employees.
