Jim the Wonder Dog may have been the smartest canine that ever lived and his hometown of Marshall, MO, would like to create some lasting tributes. Jim, a Llewellyn English Setter who lived from 1925 to 1937, entertained Missourians at state and county fairs with his mental acrobatics. He could pick winning race horses off slips of paper, identify tree types and models of automobiles, and follow instructions in Morse Code.
Several citizens are raising funds to commission a statue of Jim and a special exhibit on the site of the old Ruff Hotel. One of the fund raising projects is a video of stories related by people who actually saw Jim perform. To purchase a copy of this video ($15) or give a donation, contact Evelyn Counts, 219 E. Highlander, Marshall, MO 65340. [01/03/1998]
