Texan Teepee Motel Up for Auction
The Houston Chronicle reported in March that Wharton County Texas (SW of Houston on US 59) is auctioning off the Tee Pee Courts for back taxes of $8,775. According to the paper, the motel was built as eleven individual teepee units in 1942 and closed in the 1980's. The mayor pro tem of Wharton and Dwayne Jones of the Texas Historical Commission would like to see it revised as an RV park for "Winter Texans" but the tax assessor apparently hopes for a grander development and has referred to it as "Dead Property." Jones noted that similar motels once existed in Port Neches, Corsicana, and San Antonio and still exist in Arizona, Kentucky, and California.
