The Wooden Shoe Factory in Dutch-obsessed Holland, MI, will close by the end of the year. Owners of the 73-year old tourist attraction cited flat sales at a time when non-Dutch area thrills are growing rapidly. There has also been a steady loss of visitors to Windmill Island and Dutch Village. We hope the demise of the shoe factory doesn't jeopardize the town's Tulip Time Festival, when thousands of Klompen Dancers wearing wooden shoes klomp through the center of town... [11/07/1999]
