The stuffed carcass of the Hero of Nome, Balto the Wonder Dog, has returned to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History after temporary display in Alaska. But the museum has no plan to put Balto out in their permanent exhibits.
According to one museum official, "Our concern for the 68 year old mount is the true reason why the dog is not on permanent exhibit. Changes in humidity and temperature are destructive to the skin (or hide) and facial parts such as the nose, mouth and ears."
For the month of February, Balto may be on display to celebrate the Iditarod, but after that all bets are off. Special arrangements may still be possible to see Balto if he isn't on exhibit. Anyone who has a special interest in Balto and requests to see him is usually escorted to the mount room by a staff member. (Thanks to Greg Brown for the tip) [02/04/2001]
