Seymour, Wisconsin, one of at least five towns claiming to be the birthplace of the hamburger, has put a stake in the ground to enhance its boast. Last weekend, as part of its annual Burger Fest, residents cooked a four-ton hamburger--equal in pre-cooked weight to 32,000 Quarterpounders.
Seymour formerly held the World Record for largest real hamburger, with a 5,500 pound sandwich made in 1989. But Saco, MT, fired up a 6,000 pound behemoth in 1999. Seymour's latest effort beats Saco by a full ton.
Other towns have made the claim as incubator for the hamburger, but none quite so forcefully. In addition to Seymour: Hamburg, NY; Akron, OH; New Haven, CT; and Athens, TX all want the credit. [08/11/2001]
