The boyhood hometown of Theodor Geisel -- aka Dr. Seuss -- has unveiled a $6.2 million sculpture garden of his characters (and himself) on its village green. Springfield, MA, commissioned Geisel's stepdaughter, Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, to create the bronze sculptures, which took her seven years. They include the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Yertle the Turtle, The Grinch, and others. Children will be allowed to climb on the sculptures. Geisel spent most of his adult life in southern California. [06/08/2002]
