Black Power Salute statue proposed by college students
Students at San Jose State University, San Jose, CA, want to commemorate the famous moment in Olympic history when two US sprinters raised their fists in a "Black Power" salute during their medal ceremony. The protest by John Carlos and Tommie Smith during the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico resulted in their expulsion from the Olympics. It has been played as a poignant film clip in every Olympic since then. When SJSU students this year realized the Black Power duo were alumni, they proposed a statue to memorialize the incident and the athletes. Funding, artists, design.... TBD. [05/26/2003]
