Ruby Montana's Coral Sands Inn is a small motel built in 1952, and lovingly restored back to its mid-century modern splendor by Ruby Montana (who once ran Ruby Montana's Pinto Pony in Seattle, which was akin to the Archie McPhee outfit, but Ruby's had a decidedly cowboy/cowgirl skew).
But wait - there's more...not content to simply offer weary travelers a place to lay their head, Ruby also decorated each suite in a distinctive style. There's the Yippy Ky Yo Ky Yay Rodeo Suite, the Yiddish Cowgirl Suite, the "They Run With Poodles Don't They?" Suite, the Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Suite, the Liberace Suite, and the Howdy Doody Goes To Bali Suite, all gloriously designed and appointed by Ruby herself.
You may no longer see Frank and Dean hanging out by the kidney-shaped pool, nor Lucy & Desi checking into a room in this cozy pink motel, but you can break out your travel size mini-bottles and mix up some Singapore Slings and soon enough it won't matter.
Call for current rates & reservations (don't use the online reservation system as it's not https secure as of this writing). Ruby also rents out the entire spread for larger events.

- Washington, DC - Squished Penny Museum
I haven't visited this museum, but heard it featured on NPR. The museum highlights 250 souvenir pennies flattened, elongated and embossed by hand-cranked machines at tourist attractions across the country. Marvel at a penny squished at the 1901 Pan American Exposition's Temple of Music and those commemorating Seattle's Sylvester the Mummy, the Circus Museum of Sarasota, Fla., and even "Cadiz, Kentucky: Home of the Ham Festival." Come prepared to trade squished pennies -- and stories of how they got that way.

- Bliss, Idaho - Small Green Cement Dinosaur
On our regular drives between Seattle and Salt Lake City, we try to stop at the Oxbow Cafe in Bliss, Idaho, for a great hamburger and shakes. Next to the Oxbow is a small green cement dinosaur; only six feet tall, it looks like a baby brontosaurus. The dinosaur has looked rather ratty in the past, but has a new coat of paint this year. Then on our last trip we discovered Bob's Museum, Gift, and Rock Shop right across the street from the Oxbow. We didn't have enough time to check it out, but the trays of rocks out front and the ads for onyx eggs looked well worth a visit.

A monument to those who hydroplaned a little too fast on the chilly waters of Lake Coeur d'Alene.

- Directions:
- I-90 exit 15, then east a little over a mile on Sherman Ave. The memorial stands between the east side of The Coeur d'Alene Resort and its gated parking lot -- not next to the water, which is where you'd think a Dead Hydroplane Racers Memorial would be.

The mockup is the only surviving piece of the American SST, a supersonic airliner that was cancelled before production could begin. The Museum of Flight will be a more fitting home for it, because Seattle is where it was built.
