Wax Jim Bridger: Wind River Heritage Center

This place is a fantastic hidden gem. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but all the animal mounts and wax Wyoming history exhibits are well worth a stop!

Wind River Heritage Center - Wax Museum

Wind River Heritage Center is a kooky, fun mix of stuffed wild animals and wax figures from western history. Jake Korell, a real-time trapper and taxidermist, mounted most of the animals at the center -- and they are outstanding examples. The 45 wax museum figures portray famous events in western history - from Jim Bridger to Cattle Kate's hanging.

And most quirky? A wax figure of President Richard Nixon has been re-purposed into the corpse of Big Nose George, a true figure in Wyoming history who was skinned after being executed and his hide used to make a pair of shoes.

[Chris Peck, 07/23/2015]

We recognize the autopsy doctor from the closed wax museum in Thermopolis; this is where that collection ended up in 2010. The doctor depicted is John Osborne, who went on to become the third governor of Wyoming.
